London, UK. - 16th December 2010 – London-based manufacturer of timekeeping electronics, Hoptroff, today announced an electronic movement to end the era of ‘dumb’ watches. The subject of four patents pending, Hoptroff TimeKissTM synchronises with other smart devices, so wearers are always on time, never again needing to set the time by hand, whether to correct the date at the end of the month, to adjust for daylight saving time, or when entering a new time zone.
The Hoptroff electronics at the heart of TimeKissTM can do far more than keep time. Watches enabled with TimeKissTM carry an onboard log book, similar to BMW-owner key fobs, to speed maintenance and repairs. In addition, TimeKissTM can store personal time-related data, such as the birthdays of spouses and children, local sunset and sundown times, tidal conditions or religious holiday dates, all on a single wristwatch.
This ability to store personalised data on the watch opens up a world of mass-customisation possibilities for watch manufacturers, increasing functionality and so the value which owners place on their timepieces.
Hoptroff founder, Richard Hoptroff said: “It’s time to kiss goodbye to the dumb watch. Until now, most watches did little more than kick the seconds hand around. TimeKissTM changes that. TimeKissTM timepieces are personalised - just like your agenda. If you need to know when to set sail, when to pray or when to buy birthday presents, all you need to do is consult the TimeKissTM device on your wrist.”
The technology works by simply holding one TimeKissTM device against another (‘kissing’ the other device). Data transfer occurs in a few seconds without any need for leads or additional connectors. It can even be used to set the time on clocks in and around the home and automobile.
Hoptroff added: “TimeKissTM brings a new lease of life to the original personal device. It keeps the well-loved, universally accepted, format of a wristwatch, but adds useful, personalised functionality for updated mass-market appeal. For watchmakers embracing TimeKissTM, their treasured timepieces now have interoperability which they can use to drive additional sales to friends and family.”
TimeKissTM-enabled microchips will begin shipping in Q1 2011 for watch makers and digital clock makers and the first devices are expected to be in the market early next year.
