Mariners will know what it's like trying to determine location without GPS, Taking celestial sights with a sextant is one thing, but then having to reduce them using nautical almanacs without error - while you have to steer a yacht in a gale - is another.
"I've been there," says Richard Hoptroff. "On one transatlantic, a wave went down the hatch and fried our electrics, including the GPS. We had a reliable backup. A sextant. It worked, but it was hard work. I was determined to make it easier."
Now it's just two button presses. And a sextant (not supplied).
